Narwal Freo X Ultra

A top-rated, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that takes a fresh approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a well-built machine. The price of $1,400 is a bit steep however, you can find it on sale often enough to make the purchase more acceptable. The unit looks great, and the base station takes up just a small space in a corner of an area.

The design of this robot is able to address a few problems that we have encountered with other robotic mop and vacuum models, for example, the brushes getting caught in hair, and the brush not being able to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The sweeping performance is also impressive on carpets and bare flooring. The vacuum/mop unit has an excellent level of debris pickup and the mop can soak up floors that are not soiled.

The mops use a smart system that cleans along the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles such as food bowls, toys, and backpacks. It could get caught or get stuck with smaller, less hefty objects like shoelaces and USB cable and pen.

We used this robot to vacuum and mop a mix of pile carpet tiles, FLOR rugs and hardwood floors in a large, open floor layout. It was able to vacuum and mop the area of 90m2 in 170 minutes using FREO Mind enabled. This is a bit more than the average for Gen 4 robots.

Certain features differentiate this robot from other models in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a array of sensors, software, and hardware improvements engineered to keep it at the top of its game. It has declared autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments of up to 260 square meters.

You can customize multiple features of the Freo app, such as how frequently the robot returns to the base station, its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart) and its mopping humidity. The app can detect heavily dirty spots and create a cleaning route. It can also dispense detergent, or raise the carpet pads.

Other impressive features include a rapid charging battery, a clear display on the robot's underside, and a convenient dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is perfect for homeowners and apartment dwellers who want to simplify their chores and keep their homes clean.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele is not a slouche in the robot vacuuming world and is known for its quality and innovation. The new Miele robot is designed to take that to the next level with innovative features and top-of-the-line cleaning performance.

The RX3 features a dual-suction technology and intelligent mapping that incorporates 3D mapping, and a camera which transmits live images to your smartphone. The RX3's robust four-stage system offers excellent dust collection on hard floors and carpets. Side brushes that can be swung out, dual suction channels and easy-to-use controls keep corners clean. The 8.5 cm height means it can get under furniture that is low, and front cameras and infrared sensors aid it navigate around obstacles and thresholds with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it cleaned baking powder around corners and baseboards. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a little weaker than some other robots, but it was able to move quickly and was quiet. It did not mop and its clean pad was a challenge to attach. It also wasn't able to handle dirt that was dried on.

The app doesn't have advanced features like multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does support Alexa however, its voice controls aren't particularly intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit flaky when it returns to the charging station after an exercise. Other robots can follow an obstruction or follow an earlier route, but the RX3 bumbles around until it finally gives up.

We also experienced issues with the intelligent features of the device, such as its mapping feature and the digital stay-out zones. While it did a great job of keeping away from our furniture legs and shoes however, it was easily hung up by cables and socks and couldn't handle the tassels on carpets. That's why we chose not to include it on our Best Buy list. However, with a reasonable price tag and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering in the event you're looking to find an alternative to the traditional uprights.
